Đình Tuấn & Hoài Tâm
My name is Tuan Dinh Nguyen. I was born and growing up in Quang Ngai City, Vietnam where the conflicts on the battle fields happen almost daily. I had seen many soldiers dying during the war with my own eyes. My elementary school was nearby the military bases and airport. I had seen the parts of dead body blowout everywhere in my classroom due to the explosion of the conflicts. The smell of the dead bodies and the smoke of the guns can be smelled at my school environment on daily basis. My friends and I used to use bullet and bomb shells to make toys for our own entertainment. One of my friend burned his face while playing with the TNT (explosive chemical compound) of the unexplored bomb that laid on the ground. My childhood was terrible due to the fact with the war happening around me, that I have never forgotten.
After communists took over the South of Vietnam in 1975, my parents moved to Cam Duong Long Khanh where I became a farmer to plant rice and coffee fields in small villages (Suoi Ca, Cam Duong, Long Khanh Vietnam).
In 1989, I met a girl whose father is an unknown American soldier. Since the girl also had a terrible life in her childhood as I did, I decided to get married with her to join the journey.
During 1974, U.S.A withdrawn from Vietnam and abandoned many of their children behind. Most of those children ended up with terrible lives without their father. They did not have opportunities to go to school due to the discrimination and lack of support from the society. My wife was unfortunate to be the one of those children who is called Amerasian (Amerasian is a person who has American father and Vietnamese mother. It is called "Con Lai" in Vietnamese or Vietnam War babies in English).
Since the U.S.A left behind their children in Vietnam, they decided to open a program to allow those Amerasian (Con Lai) to come to America for better life. My wife was lucky to be one of those Amerasian, and I was allowed to come to America with her. We came to America as Refugees, and settled in Kansas City of Missouri in 1992.
When I landed in America, I realized that this country have a lot of opportunities and open doors for anyone who want to pursue their education. Since I did not have much opportunities to go to school in Vietnam, I took advantages of these opportunities and go back to school while working hard to support my family.
After several years of pursuing higher education, I finally graduated from University of Missouri Kansas City with a Master Degree in Telecommunication & Networking in 2001, and also achieved a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science in 1997.
Currently, I have been working for Sprint for 17 years as Software Engineer and my workplace is located at the Sprint World Headquarter Campus in Overland Park City of Kansas.
We have five children. My first daughter was born in Đội II Cẩm Đường Long Khánh Đồng Nai Vietnam. The other four children were born in Kansas City and Independence, Missouri.
We are a happy family and proud to be the mix of American and Vietnamese!
